Finding the Seam: Differential Assessment and Treatment of Co-Occurring OCD and Trauma (Online)

Thursday-Friday, February 11-12, 2027, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. PT, Online  |  6 CEUs

An estimated 8.2 million adults in the U.S. live with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Yet, OCD remains widely misunderstood and underdiagnosed, with few mental health providers trained in effective therapies.

People can be vulnerable to developing OCD because of both biological and environmental factors. When OCD develops after a traumatic experience, it can be difficult to apply evidence-based therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT). When OCD co-occurs with trauma, symptoms often interact in ways that complicate assessment and treatment, leaving many clinicians uncertain about how to apply interventions without worsening trauma responses.

Participants in this two-part training will learn how to apply trauma-informed OCD treatment using ACT, ERP, and I-CBT while remaining grounded in manualized, evidence-based practices.

Research and diagnostic measures from Pinciotti will support understanding of comorbid presentations, clinician roadblocks, and common misconceptions that impact treatment. Clinicians will also explore strategies for diagnosing OCD, selecting effective interventions, and supporting clients whose OCD and trauma symptoms reinforce one another.

On average, individuals with OCD suffer for 11 years before receiving a correct diagnosis and effective treatment. Increasing the number of clinicians skilled in diagnosing and treating OCD can improve access to competent care and support meaningful recovery for individuals living with both OCD and trauma.

Note: This is an intermediate-level training and is not intended as an introduction to OCD and PTSD assessment or treatment. Prior training in ERP, ACT, I-CBT, OCD and PTSD are recommended, but not required.

Following this training, participants will have a better ability to:

  • Differentiate OCD from PTSD and other trauma-related presentations

  • Identify when OCD and trauma are co-occurring and understand how the conditions interact

  • Apply trauma-informed principles while maintaining fidelity to evidence-based OCD treatments (ACT, ERP, and I-CBT)

  • Recognize common clinician misconceptions and treatment barriers that delay recovery.

  • Develop treatment plans that integrate OCD and trauma considerations without compromising evidence-based care

  • Confidently diagnose OCD and select appropriate interventions for complex presentations
